Red Sox Game Preview: Red Sox vs Blue Jays, 2/23/25

Alex Bregman could join Detroit Tigers if he hits free agency again
Alex Bregman gets his first start for the Red Sox

Both Red Sox marquee signees will make their spring training debut's today, as Garrett Crochet gets the start and Alex Bregman starts at third for the Sox. Crochet, 25, was acquired from the White Sox for a major haul of prospects this offseason. Bregman recently signed a 3 year, 120 million dollar deal with opt-outs after the first two years. Here's your lineup for todays Grapefruit League clash:

    Roman Anthony, LF

    Alex Bregman, 3B

    Triston Casas, 1B

    Trevor Story, SS

    Rob Refsnyder, DH

    David Hamilon, 2B

    Ceddanne Rafeala, CF

    Blake Sabol, C

    Nate Eaton, RF

2024 All Star MVP Jarren Duran was a late scratch to the lineup as he battles a sore calf, Alex Cora notes it's nothing serious and he expects the star, and catcher Connor Wong, to be back tomorrow. He will be replaced by top prospect Roman Anthony, whom Sox fans will surely be excited to see in action.

Barring Rafeal Devers, Red Sox fans will get a look at what will likely be their starting infield this season. Sox fans desperately hope for a healthy season from Trevor Story, as the 2 time All Star has yet to appear in over 100 games for the Red Sox.

Cora provided an update on the aforementioned Rafeal Devers, noting "today is his first day on the field. We had live BP's, he's probably tracking there, he'll let us know." Cora would go onto add, "He took grounders this morning. Threw to first base. He's getting there, not 100%." The Red Sox appear to be taking it slow with Devers, who is coming off of a pair of shoulder injuries last season. The slugger has reportedly been in Fort Meyer's since mid January, well before he was required to appear.

Much of the attention will be on Garrett Crochet though, and for good reason. The flamethrowing lefty was key addition to the Red Sox rotation, making good on promises from Craig Breslow and the front office to bolster a rotation that faded in the second half and lacked a true ace.

First pitch will be at 1:05 pm EST. Tune in on NESN, NESN 360, or NESN Nation, NESN's new channel, available on Prime Video and the Roku Channel.
